|Mount Pleasant Village is a community-based nonprofit that mobilizes resources to enrich the lives of neighborhood residents. Our neighbor-to-neighbor volunteer services and social, wellness, educational and cultural programs help members remain independent in our homes as we age. Our Village is part of a nationwide movement that began in 2001 with the founding of Boston's Beacon Hill Village to help seniors remain in their homes as they age. Capitol Hill Village became the first in Washington, DC, followed by Villages in a over a dozen other DC communities.
One of a dozen Villages serving seniors in our city, Mount Pleasant Village is located in the historic Mount Pleasant neighborhood in the center of the city, about three miles north of the White House. Its boundaries generally correspond to the borders of Washington’s ANC 1D: 16th St. NW on the east, Harvard St. on the south, Rock Creek Park on the west and Piney Branch Rd. on the north. We also accept out-of-boundary members on a case-by-case basis. According to the 2010 Census, approximately 11,000 people live in this area. In that year, approximately 1,300 of them were over 60 years old.
Mount Pleasant Village embodies the unique characteristics of our residents and the values by which we live our lives. Reflecting the demographics and personality of the Mount Pleasant neighborhood, we are a volunteer organization. The services we offer are provided by volunteers as are our activities organizers. As a result, we can keep our annual membership fee comparatively low at $50 per year, much lower than that charged by some other villages, many of which employ one or more staff members.
We believe strongly in being inclusive and welcoming to everyone in our inter-generational community, and will reach out to those who are not fully represented among our membership. This includes the homeowners, renters, non-profits and small businesses that make Mount Pleasant home. We are committed to being member-focused and responsive to their needs. We will build a durable framework for neighbor-to-neighbor support that will make it easier for us all to celebrate the opportunities and meet the challenges of aging well in community.
